Is Cuba Ready for Rotary?
The Update
Merna Gil
Monday night CIRC welcome’s back our friend Merna Gil who will provide updates on life in Cuba and the results of her trip there last month. During her April visit, Merna’s group focused on small business development activites and enhancing the educational experience of students in privately owned Montessori preschools in Havana.
Merna Gil has been an educator, mentor and advisor to both young and old her entire life. With 45 years of experience as a teacher, education – both formal and informal – is her passion. After retiring, Merna joined Rotary in 2017, with a mission to help enlighten student youth groups, leading to the creation of “Best Practices” for working with students and sponsoring clubs to help create a positive impact in their lives. Much of Merna’s recent focus has been on providing humanitarian services to here beloved friends in Cuba.

Ann Evans (right), Charlotte International Rotary Club member, was recognized by Past District Governor Beth Trotter (left) at the club’s September 30th meeting. Ann has been appointed to the position of Major Gifts Initiative (MGI) Adviser in the Health Area for The Rotary Foundation. MGI Advisers provide leadership and coordination of efforts to raise money in cash and commitments for Rotary’s seven areas of focus and the Rotary Peace Centers. Ann is one of only six advisers worldwide in the health area whose shared goal is to raise a combined US$60 million in cash and commitments for the Disease Prevention & Treatment and Maternal & Child Health areas of focus. Congratulations to CIRC member Ann Evans for this extremely high honor from The Rotary Foundation.
